Rethinking Teaching Through Research

The LUMS Learning Institute (LLI) recently hosted an engaging faculty development workshop on Fundamentals of Pedagogical Research, led by Dr. Farah Nadeem. The session invited faculty to rethink where meaningful educational research begins not in large scale studies alone, but within the everyday experiences of teaching and learning in the classroom.

Through discussion, reflection, and hands-on activities, participants explored how classroom interactions, student feedback, assessment outcomes, and learning patterns can serve as rich sources of insight for pedagogical inquiry.

At the heart of the workshop was a simple but important question:

How can educators turn what they already observe in their classrooms into meaningful research questions about learning?

From Classroom Questions to Research Questions

A central theme of the workshop was helping participants recognize how common classroom challenges can become valuable research opportunities.

Questions about student engagement, participation, assessment, and learning outcomes were explored through the lens of inquiry. Faculty were encouraged to move beyond identifying challenges and begin asking:

What is happening in my classroom, why is it happening, and how can I better understand it?

This shift from observation to investigation lies at the heart of pedagogical research.

Learning Through Reflection and Collaboration

The session was highly interactive, with faculty actively engaging in reflective exercises, collaborative discussions, and hands on activities that connected research concepts with real classroom experiences.

Participants shared teaching challenges, exchanged perspectives, and reflected on how systematic inquiry can strengthen both teaching practice and student learning.

This collaborative format created space for meaningful dialogue and peer learning, reinforcing the idea that educational research begins with thoughtful questions.

Strengthening Teaching Through Evidence

Pedagogical research empowers educators to better understand what works, what needs improvement, and how teaching practices can evolve through evidence and reflection.

By introducing faculty to these foundations, the workshop aimed to foster a stronger culture of reflective practice, scholarly teaching, and continuous learning

As LLI continues to create spaces for faculty development, workshops like this play an important role in strengthening teaching through curiosity, collaboration, and inquiry.

Because great teaching does not only deliver knowledge, but it also continuously seeks to understand how learning happens best.
