Mastering the Art of Teaching & Training

Location: LUMS Learning Institute- Ground Floor Academic Block (Out-Gate Entrance; Opposite OSA) 

 

Workshop description 

The "Mastering the Art of Teaching and Training" programme is a 3-day workshop offered in a small group setting at LUMS that is designed to improve the teaching effectiveness of both new and experienced educators. Led by a team of LUMS expert facilitators and renowned LUMS faculty, the programme covers core pedagogical skills such as active learning strategies for student engagement, constructive feedback on lessons, suggestions for improvement, and the use of Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) 

Using an experiential learning approach, educators will be provided with information on the theory and practice of teaching adult learners, developing learning outcomes with accompanying lesson plans, techniques for eliciting learner participation, and suggestions for evaluating learning. This workshop will not only build educators teaching skills and enhance their confidence but will also enable them to learn from and foster partnerships with colleagues from other disciplines. 

The workshop will engage participants in: 

  • Generating effective feedback and discussion 

  • Planning and delivering "10-minute lessons" 

  • Developing participatory instructional techniques 

  • Listening actively 

  • Learning and teaching collaboratively 

Educators and Teachers in higher education will find this training particularly useful. 

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Construct intended learning outcomes (ILOs) 
  • Incorporate active learning strategies into lessons 
  • Enhance lesson planning and delivery approaches 
  • Collect and utilise feedback from learners about lesson delivery 
  • Provide valuable and constructive feedback on others' lessons

Advanced Preparation: 

For this workshop, you are required to prepare in advance a 10mins lesson for micro teaching which you will need to deliver on Day 1. For further details, please find attached to this email the ‘Instructional Skills Training Preparation guide’ which will help you through your experience. 

Note: Please review the Preparation Guide as soon as possible, as your learning and productivity is dependent on your preparation in advance for the workshop. 

You are requested to arrive promptly on all three days. The agenda and breakdown of each day will be shared in-person.

Time Commitment 

It is mandatory to attend all 3 days, to receive a certificate of participation. 

Workshop delivery 

During the workshop, each participant will conduct 3, 10-minute lessons in small groups of 4 or 5 people each, receiving oral, written, and visual feedback on their instruction.  

  • Please prepare in advance a 10-minute lesson to deliver on the first day. You may choose any topic that interests you. There is also some preparation required after the first and second days. You will present 10-minute lessons on each day of the workshop, building upon your skills each day. Again, you may choose any topic, keeping in mind that this is an opportunity to try new teaching approaches not traditionally used in your academic discipline.  

  • Your 10 min lesson will be recorded, and the recording will be shared with you. No one else will have access to your video lesson.  

  • This intensive workshop is designed to improve your teaching skills whether you are an experienced or novice instructor. Participants are encouraged to use participatory instructional techniques and technological aids.

During the programme, participants will have the opportunity to practice teaching skills and learn new techniques by teaching a 10-minute lesson each day. Working in small groups, they will receive extensive written and verbal feedback on their teaching from their peers and facilitators, providing them with valuable insights into the student perspective.

Dr. Alizai is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at LUMS. He brings years of experience as a faculty, researcher, software engineer, and technical lead both in industrial and academic settings. He has authored a book and book-chapters, and published more than 60 scientific papers while abroad and indigenously from Pakistan, several of them in top-flight ACM/IEEE journals and conferences (CoNEXT, SenSys, IPSN, BuildSys, LCTES, EWSN, TOSN, TECS, CCR).

Dr. Qasim Imtiaz received his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET Lahore). He moved to Deajeon, South Korea to obtain his M.S. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). After completing his M.S. in 2010 he joined the Institute of Energy Technology, ETH Zürich (Switzerland) to pursue his doctoral studies under the supervision of Professor Christoph Müller. He is a trained facilitator in Instructional Skills Development and Course Design training.

Angbeen Atif Mirza is an Assistant Professor at the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law, LUMS. She holds a B.A., LL.B from LUMS (2008), and an LL.M from the University of Michigan Law School (2010). She is the Faculty Director for the LUMS Office of Accessibility and Inclusion. She also serves on the Board of Digital Rights Foundation, a cyber rights organization working in Pakistan.

Eilya Mohsin is an accomplished education professional who holds a Master of Philosophy in Education Leadership and Management from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). In her professional career, she has held several key positions at LUMS. Currently, she serves as the Head of Educational Development & Strategic Initiatives at LUMS Learning Institute, where she provides visionary leadership and strategic direction for educational development initiatives. Prior to this role, she was the Head of Academic Affairs and Communication at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS), LUMS.

Anusheh is Faculty Development Lead and an education developer at the LUMS Learning Institute (LLI) leading the Faculty Development Initiatives. She is a lead facilitator at LLI for Faculty Certificate in Teaching & Learning, and plays a pivotal role in offering pedagogical consultations to  Higher Education faculty. She is a trained facilitator in Instructional Skills Development and Course Design training. Anusheh is also is a part of policy engagements within university pertaining to teaching and learning.
