FCTL: Theory and Practice- Teaching Skills Module

Workshop description

Are you interested in refining your teaching in a small setting with feedback from peers? If so, you will want to join the Instructional Skills Development Workshop program. Over three days, through an experiential learning-centered instructional program, you will engage with theme sessions followed by teaching 10-minute mini-lessons to peer colleagues.

The program is designed to expand your reflective practice, enhance your teaching, and develop your feedback skills. The underlying principles of the workshop are participatory learning, diversity of learning, adult learning, and the building of learning communities in classrooms.

The workshop is a forum for peer-based instructional development designed to strengthen instructors' skills through intensive, yet practical exercises in learning-centered teaching. Mixing small and large group interaction, the workshop will engage participants in:

  1. Generating effective feedback and discussion
  2. Planning and delivering “10-minute lessons"
  3. Developing participatory instructional techniques
  4. Listening actively
  5. Learning and teaching collaboratively

Advanced Preparation

For this workshop, you are required to prepare in advance a 10mins lesson for micro teaching which you will need to deliver on Day 1. Upon registration confirmation, you will be emailed the ‘Instructional Skills Training Preparation guide’ which will help you through your experience. Upon registration confirmation you will be added to the course on LMS to access the resources required during the three days workshop.

Note: Please review the Preparation Guide as soon as possible, as your learning and productivity is dependent on your preparation in advance for the workshop.

You are requested to arrive promptly on all three days. The agenda and breakdown of each day will be shared in-person.

Workshop delivery

During the workshop, each participant will conduct 2, 10-minute lessons in small groups of 4 or 5 people each, receiving oral, written, and visual feedback on their instruction.

  • Please prepare in advance a 10-minute lesson to deliver on the first day. You may choose any topic that interests you. There is also some preparation required after the first and second days. You will present 10-minute lessons on two days of the workshop, building upon your skills each day. Again, you may choose any topic, keeping in mind that this is an opportunity to try new teaching approaches not traditionally used in your academic discipline.
  • Your 10 min lesson will be recorded, and the recording will be shared with you. No one else will have access to your video lesson.
  • This intensive workshop is designed to improve your teaching skills whether you are an experienced or novice instructor. Participants are encouraged to use a variety of participatory instructional techniques and technological aids.
