The course runs for 6 weeks. Each participant does 3 observations over six weeks.
Course Description and Delivery
Remember all that you learned in the Instructional Skills Development Workshop (ISD)? How would you like to experiment with a few new teaching techniques/activities in your classes this semester and receive support and feedback along the way? Beginning in the first week of October, the Learning Institute will offer a course for LUMS teachers called Teaching Squares.
This is a blended course that continues the thinking and work introduced in the LUMS Instructional Skills Development Workshops (ISD). The purpose of this course is to support LUMS faculty in their commitment to developing effective and engaging teaching practices. The nature of the course is very practical as it focuses on the integration of new teaching techniques and learning activities within courses currently in session. You will have the opportunity to design new classroom experiences, observe your teaching on video, receive timely and personalized feedback on your teaching, and witness innovative teaching by your peers in their classrooms. Building on the LUMS ISD, you will be expected to apply previous knowledge regarding lesson planning, active learning, and formative feedback with students in your current courses. This course uses video, online discussion, and research-based teaching and learning resources to support your individual development of effective teaching practices.
Overall Course Goals
To inspire continuous exploration and innovation in teaching and learning practices. • To encourage regular interactions—faculty to faculty and faculty to students—for the purposes of sharing feedback on teaching and learning experiences
To build a community of educators who have a shared interest in developing their teaching skills, and enhancing the effectiveness of student learning experiences at LUMS.
Learning Outcomes
Identify new teaching techniques and learning activities to implement in class
Plan and organize lessons according to BOPPPS/other lesson planning model
Implement teaching techniques and learning activities within the classroom
Modify lessons by incorporating peer and student feedback and new techniques or activities as needed
Judge effectiveness of teaching techniques and learning activities on student engagement by reflecting

Dr. Alizai is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at LUMS. He brings years of experience as a faculty, researcher, software engineer, and technical lead both in industrial and academic settings. He has authored a book and book-chapters, and published more than 60 scientific papers while abroad and indigenously from Pakistan, several of them in top-flight ACM/IEEE journals and conferences (CoNEXT, SenSys, IPSN, BuildSys, LCTES, EWSN, TOSN, TECS, CCR).
Anusheh is Faculty Development Lead and an education developer at the LUMS Learning Institute (LLI) leading the Faculty Development Initiatives. She is a lead facilitator at LLI for Faculty Certificate in Teaching & Learning, and plays a pivotal role in offering pedagogical consultations to Higher Education faculty.
Dr. Adeel Tariq is an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Economics at the Lahore University of Management Sciences. A Fulbright Scholar, he holds a PhD in Economics from Binghamton University, an MSc in Economics from the Lahore University of Management Sciences, an MBA from the Lahore School of Economics and a BSc (Hons) in Economics & Management from the University of London.
